It doesn't look like I ever updated this. Jerome seemed to drop off the end of the world. So, here is what I finished on this project. Enjoy!

Welp, while we've been patiently waiting on Jerome to get his renderings together for the contest I figure I would post some of my updates here before revealing the finished product. Here are the teasers:
Okay, so as everything draws near and I am finalizing all of the details in my model I had to take the leap and implement something I have been keeping secret this whole time... the base shape of this light saber is... ROUND... *bum bun baaa*
So, to start tacking on the rest of the elements to define the final shape of my lightsabre I had to reveal my best secret for my entry so far. I am still tweaking lighting and environment. But, here is the progress so far: (Don't worry -- I still have a couple of surprises in store!) With the competition deadline just around the corner I am going to have to start laying it on thick. The primary model is pretty much done and it (for the most part) has turned out how I have wanted it. Now I am spending my time adding lots of little details, deciding on my environment backdrop and colors and staging the picture. Jerome has been showing me his work and I must say -- I'm worried! His work is marvelous and I am rather jealous of his skill, but this is all for great fun! Keep checking back to see our progress. Don't forget -- voting starts 1/11/2016! Added sectional lines to break up the handle. Some organics to relate to that Star Wars old timey/future feel. Editing backdrop / color / lighting.
Alright - as you may already know - Jerome and I have both gone past the contest entry deadline. What can I say? We're busy people. Nonetheless, we continue to toil through and see what we can do. I have manipulated and changed various materials and textures and it looks like we're getting a bit closer but it is still missing some touches... Can't wait to see the outcome soon!
Been beating my head for the past few days trying to figure out how to simply tile a procedural map in Blender Nodes! Nodes, I love you, but major 3D packages have you beat in the materials department. 3D studio was nothing more than increasing a value and changing UV coordinates was no harder than manipulating a dummy object.
Finally, I think I have the idea down and it is working kinda... I have been busy selecting faces and assigning materials. I have been playing with Nodes, but I'm not sure if I am getting the hang of it. I basically tried to color the body white, but in rendering white doesn't seem to show. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I hope I get it straight before the competition is over!
Here are progress pictures from today: For the most part, done with the modeling aside from a few tweaks I want to make later. I think it is time to start texturing!
I am almost done with the primary model, I think. Going to add a few more details for edges, et cetera. Will have to smooth out the wrinkles and start adding materials/textures next... Huzzah!
