So, I have been taking bits of time throughout the week to begin constructing "Noah." I created an opening dialog box which will probably be used to check for updates, provide news, or just present an entry screen for "Play / Options / Website / ETC".
Selecting "Play" opens the main window and switches the program to fullscreen based on the user's own screen resolution (instead of forcing its own resolution.) From here we can begin work. The first bit of coding I have done is to present a game menu when pressing [Escape] on the keyboard. Had to develop something dynamically-generated. I had a hard time getting this to implement since GameMaker: Studio doesn't support dynamic function creation and calls. With the great support of YoYoGames Forums' I got quick and professional help and developed a few social bonds. I see this being an invaluable resource in the time to come as I develop "Noah".

So... here we go again. Humble Bundle had a new bundle on sale for Game Maker! I went ahead and got the bundle and am re-motivated to begin this project again. I am currently working on a couple of 3D design projects I need to finish and get out of the way. And then... Noah. :)
I first learned about Game Maker through a bundle I bought on Humble Bundle before, but that was mostly for RPG Maker stuff. Unfortunately, I just had to determine that RPG Maker was not going to meet the needs for Noah. Game Maker Studio seems to have what I need so far. So, let's see what I can do! Keep checking back for new resources toward the game and any eventual progress updates! The Let Down Okay, so after much research and probing it feels like the best decision to go ahead and change game engine plans. Game Guru is quick and powerful, but it seems geared only for FPS for the most part -- which is not going to work for this game. I went ahead and decided to drop Game Guru on this project. It is just too limited for the things I need to accomplish for this game, although it has great 3D support features which I desperately want, but not enough features that I am going to need for a top-down omni-perspective click-n-play. The TransitionNo coding or graphics have been generated so far for this project -- just brainstorming and implementation research. Thusly, I have stumbled upon GameMaker: Studio (available on Steam). This seems to cover most of the features I will need and the ability to create my own add-ins to expand on needed elements.
The biggest RED FLAG I have seen so far in my research is the ability to support video, and the existing expansion I see to support it is a TON of money I am not going to drop yet. Any quality video game is going to have intro videos, credits rolls, and cutscenes! However, since this engine seems to support everything else we can go ahead and begin the project here and program in the rest as we go! Wish me luck! Research, Research, Research...I have been watching countless hours of Game Guru tutorials and reading articles on using Game Guru and import techniques for using self-generated data packs.
So far, from what I have seen, the Game Guru engine looks very... basic. My hope for making a quality commercial-quality game using this product is somewhat in the air at this point. I have heard of LUA scripting, but am unfamiliar with it so far -- so this is another "language" I may have to learn during this process. Nonetheless, I seek to produce a fully playable game using just Game Guru! Be sure to follow this blog to watch my journey! |
