Creating a Burning Meadow
Well, I decided it was time to do an organic scene and add it to my repertoire. Enjoy as I post my progress here!
Inspired by the Grass Essentials add-on developed and sold by Blender Guru, I hunted for something similar that I could use that was free. Surprisingly enough, I quickly found Grass Free by developer 3D Wolf. This is a great free add-on for the Blender community that has a lot to offer and is really easy to use. This is my first benchmark test using the add-on to see what it can do!

Final Render
Upped this sucker up to 200 passes. With everything turned on the scene rendered in just under 4 hours at 1920x1080. Without the instanced particles (grass) it took about 30 minutes. Enjoy! :)
Since the last update, added in a mountain range to better transition the sky. Added some floating embers and ashes and used custom vertex and weight paints to create a burning leaf to add character and story to the picture.
Moved the camera ever so slightly to add more definition and depth. Also added DOF to the camera to blur out the distance a bit. Over 4,000,000 particles and counting. Current render time with 128 Samples is 28 minutes. :) So, I'm working on my first nature scene. Using lots of tools I've never used before. Hopefully it will evolve into something cool. Lots of bugs to kink out. :)

Grass FreeThe add-on used for most of the work in this image is known as Grass Free.
It is a great object-based add-on that offers a variety of grass and plants with multiple deviations of each. The plant particle systems are already setup, you just need to add it to your object and adjust as needed. Check out and get Grass Free here: http://3dwolf.weebly.com/grass.html |
